Lorraine Hansberry was an American playwright and writer, best known for her play A Raisin in the Sun. Born in Chicago, Illinois, Hansberry attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison before moving to New York City, where she became involved in the civil rights movement and began her career as a writer.
Hansberry’s most notable work, A Raisin in the Sun, premiered on Broadway in 1959. The play explores the experiences of a Black family in Chicago as they attempt to improve their circumstances amid racial segregation and economic hardship. It was the first play written by an African American woman to be produced on Broadway. The production starred Sidney Poitier and Claudia McNeil, and it received critical acclaim for its portrayal of Black family life and its engagement with social issues.
In addition to her work as a playwright, Hansberry wrote essays and articles addressing civil rights, feminism, and African independence. She contributed to publications such as Freedom, a newspaper founded by Paul Robeson. Hansberry was also active in various social and political causes, participating in events and organisations that advocated for racial equality and justice.
Hansberry’s second play, The Sign in Sidney Brustein’s Window, opened on Broadway in 1964. Although it had a shorter run than her debut, it further established her as a significant voice in American theatre. Hansberry’s writing and activism have continued to influence generations of playwrights and activists.
In 1960, A Raisin in the Sun was awarded the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play.
