Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Lissa Evans is a British author and former television producer and director. She studied medicine at Newcastle University before working as a junior doctor. Evans later moved into radio and television, producing and directing comedy programmes such as Room 101 and Father Ted.
Her first children’s novel, Small Change for Stuart, was published by Doubleday in 2011. The book was shortlisted for the 2011 Costa Book Awards (Children’s Book category), the 2012 Carnegie Medal, and the 2012 Branford Boase Award. Its sequel, Big Change for Stuart (also published as Horten’s Incredible Illusions), followed in 2012.
Evans’s other children’s books include Wed Wabbit (2017), which was shortlisted for the 2017 Costa Children’s Book Award and the 2018 Carnegie Medal. She has also written for adults, with titles such as Their Finest (2009), which was adapted into a feature film in 2016.
Her work has been published by major UK publishers, including Doubleday and David Fickling Books. Wed Wabbit was selected for the 2019 Blue Peter Book Awards shortlist. Evans’s books have received critical recognition and have been translated into several languages.
In 2018, Wed Wabbit was longlisted for the UKLA Book Awards. Evans continues to write for both children and adults, with her books regularly appearing on award shortlists.
