Laurie Lee was an English poet, novelist, and screenwriter, best known for his autobiographical trilogy. He was born in Stroud, Gloucestershire. Lee’s most recognised work is Cider with Rosie, published in 1959, which recounts his childhood in the Cotswolds after the First World War. The book is the first in a trilogy, followed by As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969), which describes his journey from rural England to London and then across Spain in the 1930s, and A Moment of War (1991), which details his experiences during the Spanish Civil War.
Lee’s writing is noted for its vivid descriptions of rural life and the English countryside. In addition to his autobiographical works, he published several volumes of poetry, including The Sun My Monument (1944) and My Many-Coated Man (1955). He also wrote scripts for documentary films and contributed to various magazines and journals.
Laurie Lee’s Cider with Rosie has become a widely studied text in British schools and remains a significant work in 20th-century English literature. Cider with Rosie was first published by Hogarth Press in 1959.
