Kim Ryall Woolcock is a scientist turned children’s author whose books introduce biology and biomimicry to young readers. After an honours degree in English literature at the University of British Columbia she completed a master’s in biology at Duke University, later moving from laboratory work into science communication and medical writing.
Her picture-led non-fiction title It’s Tough to Be Tiny: The Secret Life of Small Creatures, illustrated by Stacey Thomas, explores how minibeasts survive and thrive – from ingenious defence to surprising hunting strategies. The book is published by Flying Eye Books for primary-age readers and is supported by classroom resources and short explainer videos produced with the publisher.
Woolcock is also the co-author, with Megan Clendenan, of Design Like Nature: Biomimicry for a Healthy Planet, published by Orca Book Publishers. Aimed at middle-grade readers, it shows how scientists and engineers study organisms to inspire problem-solving in areas such as materials, architecture and energy.
Before writing for children, she worked as an exhibits director at a natural history museum and as a freelance science writer and editor, experience that informs the accessible structure and factual focus of her books. It’s Tough to Be Tiny was published in 2022 by Flying Eye Books.
