Kicking off our first set of book club recommendations is April 2022’s picks featuring a diverse range of titles by Hayley Wells, Pooja Puri, Kelly Barnhill, Eloise Williams, Varsha Shah, Pam Smy and Nancy Springer.
Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Kelly Barnhill is an American author known for her work in children’s and young adult literature. She has written several novels, short stories, and works of non-fiction. Barnhill’s writing often explores themes of magic, transformation, and the complexities of human relationships.
Her notable works include The Girl Who Drank the Moon, which was published by Algonquin Young Readers in 2016. This novel received critical recognition and is widely read in schools. Barnhill has also written The Witch’s Boy (Algonquin Young Readers, 2014), Iron Hearted Violet (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 2012), and The Mostly True Story of Jack (Little, Brown Books for Young Readers, 2011).
In addition to her novels, Barnhill has published short fiction and essays in various outlets. Her work has been recognised by several literary organisations. The Girl Who Drank the Moon was awarded the John Newbery Medal in 2017.
