Kathryn Stockett is an American author best known for her debut novel, The Help. Born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi, Stockett attended the University of Alabama, where she studied English and Creative Writing. After graduating, she moved to New York City and worked in magazine publishing and marketing for several years.
Stockett began writing The Help in the early 2000s, drawing inspiration from her experiences growing up in the American South. The novel, set in Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960s, explores the relationships between African American maids and the white families for whom they worked. The Help was published by Amy Einhorn Books, an imprint of Penguin Group, in 2009.
The book received widespread attention and was recognised by several literary organisations. In 2010, The Help was longlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction. Stockett’s work has been discussed in numerous interviews and articles, where she has spoken about her writing process and the historical context of her novel.
