Katherine Applegate is an American author known for her works in children’s and young adult literature. She co-authored the Animorphs series with her husband, Michael Grant, published by Scholastic from 1996 to 2001. The series comprises 54 main books and several companion titles. Applegate also wrote the Everworld and Remnants series.
Her standalone novel The One and Only Ivan, published by HarperCollins in 2012, won the 2013 Newbery Medal, awarded by the American Library Association for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The book is inspired by the true story of a gorilla named Ivan and has been adapted into a film by Disney.
Applegate’s other notable works include Home of the Brave (2007), which received the SCBWI Golden Kite Award for Best Fiction, and Crenshaw (2015), a middle-grade novel published by Feiwel & Friends. She has also written Wishtree (2017), which was named a New York Times bestseller and received the Jane Addams Children’s Book Award.
Her books have been translated into multiple languages and are published internationally. In 2019, Applegate published The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise, which won the 2020 Golden Kite Award for Middle Grade/Young Reader Fiction. Her most recent works include Dogtown (2023), co-authored with Gennifer Choldenko.
