Kate Atkinson biography

Kate Atkinson is a British author known for her novels, short stories, and plays. She studied English literature at the University of Dundee. Atkinson’s debut novel, Behind the Scenes at the Museum, was published by Doubleday in 1995 and won the Whitbread Book of the Year Award the same year.

Atkinson has written several novels, including the Jackson Brodie detective series, which began with Case Histories in 2004. The series also includes One Good Turn (2006), When Will There Be Good News? (2008), Started Early, Took My Dog (2010), and Big Sky (2019). The Jackson Brodie novels have been adapted for television by the BBC.

Her standalone works include Human Croquet (1997), Emotionally Weird (2000), and Life After Life (2013). Life After Life was shortlisted for the Women’s Prize for Fiction in 2013. Atkinson followed this with A God in Ruins (2015), which won the Costa Novel Award. Other notable works include Transcription (2018) and Shrines of Gaiety (2022).

Atkinson’s writing has received recognition from several literary organisations. She was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2011 New Year Honours for services to literature. In 2015, she won the Costa Novel Award for A God in Ruins.
