Kaiu Shirai is a Japanese manga author best known for writing the series The Promised Neverland. Shirai collaborated with illustrator Posuka Demizu to create this work, which was first serialised in the manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump published by Shueisha. The series began its run in August 2016 and concluded in June 2020. The Promised Neverland follows the story of children living in an orphanage who uncover a dark secret and attempt to escape.
Shirai’s work on The Promised Neverland has been published in English by VIZ Media. The manga has received recognition in the industry, including being nominated for the 11th Manga Taishō awards in 2018. In addition to the main series, Shirai and Demizu have produced several one-shot stories, such as DC3 and Spirit Photographer Saburo Kono, which have appeared in Weekly Shōnen Jump and Jump GIGA.
Shirai’s writing is characterised by suspenseful storytelling and intricate plotting. The collaboration with Demizu has been noted for its synergy between narrative and artwork. The Promised Neverland was completed with a total of 20 collected volumes, with the final volume released in 2020.
