Joy Cowley is a New Zealand author known for her extensive work in children’s literature. She began her writing career in the 1960s, initially publishing short stories for adults before focusing on children’s books. Cowley has written more than 600 titles, including novels, picture books, and educational readers. Her notable works include the Mrs Wishy-Washy series, Bow Down Shadrach, and The Silent One.
Cowley’s books have been published internationally and translated into several languages. She has contributed significantly to literacy education, with many of her stories used in schools worldwide. In addition to fiction, she has written educational materials and poetry for children.
Her work has received numerous accolades. Cowley was awarded the New Zealand Order of Merit in 1992 and was promoted to Distinguished Companion in 2005. She received the Prime Minister’s Award for Literary Achievement in 2010. In 2018, Cowley was named a member of the Order of New Zealand, the country’s highest honour.
Joy Cowley’s Snake and Lizard, illustrated by Gavin Bishop, won the New Zealand Post Children’s Book of the Year Award in 2008. She has also received the Margaret Mahy Award and the Storylines Gaelyn Gordon Award for a Much-Loved Book. In 2017, Cowley was presented with the Hans Christian Andersen Award for her lasting contribution to children’s literature.
Her book The Silent One was adapted into a feature film in 1985.
