Jon Howie Stallworthy (1935–2014) was a British poet, critic and editor. He was born in London and educated at the Dragon School, Rugby School and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he later became a fellow. After completing his studies he joined the Oxford University Press, working first as an editor and then rising to become editor of the poetry list.
Stallworthy published eight collections of poetry, beginning with The Astronomy of Love (1961). His critical works include studies of Louis MacNeice and Wilfred Owen. His biography Wilfred Owen (1974) won the Duff Cooper Memorial Prize and the W. H. Smith Literary Award.
He was a noted anthologist, co-editing The Norton Anthology of Poetry and producing The Oxford Book of War Poetry (1984). He also served as the editor of Owen’s complete poems and fragments.
In addition to his publishing career, Stallworthy was Professor of English Literature at the University of Oxford and later held the post of Professor of English at the University of Rochester, New York. He was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1993.
His final poetry collection, War Poet, appeared in 2014, the year of his death.
