Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
John Agard is a Guyanese-British poet, playwright, and children’s writer known for his work in promoting Caribbean culture and literature. Born in British Guiana, Agard moved to the United Kingdom in 1977. He has published numerous collections of poetry and books for children, often exploring themes of identity, race, and cultural heritage.
Agard’s notable works for children include We Animals Would Like a Word With You and Goldilocks on CCTV. His poetry often incorporates elements of Caribbean dialect and folklore, making his work distinctive and engaging for young readers. Agard’s writing is celebrated for its wit, humour, and ability to address complex themes in an accessible manner.
In addition to his work for children, Agard has published several collections of poetry for adults, including Half-Caste and Other Poems and Travel Light Travel Dark. His contributions to literature have been recognised with numerous awards, including the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry in 2012.
Agard has also been involved in education, frequently visiting schools and libraries to conduct workshops and readings. His work has been included in the UK national curriculum, making him an influential figure in contemporary British literature.
In 2021, Agard was awarded the BookTrust Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising his significant impact on children’s literature and his dedication to inspiring young readers.
