Jeff VanderMeer biography

Jeff VanderMeer is an American author of science fiction and fantasy known for ecological and speculative storytelling. He is the author of the Southern Reach Trilogy, which begins with Annihilation (Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2014). Annihilation won the Nebula Award and Shirley Jackson Award and was adapted into a feature film directed by Alex Garland in 2018.

Born in Pennsylvania, VanderMeer spent part of his childhood in Fiji before moving to the United States. He studied at the University of Florida, where he became active in literary magazines and small-press publishing.

VanderMeer has edited anthologies with his wife, Ann VanderMeer, including The New Weird (2008) and The Big Book of Science Fiction (2016). His nonfiction writing has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The Guardian and The Atlantic, often focusing on climate change and environmental issues.

His later novels include Borne (2017), Dead Astronauts (2019), and Hummingbird Salamander (2021), each published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. These works continue his exploration of ecological crisis and speculative futures.

Annihilation won the Nebula Award for Best Novel in 2014.
