Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Jeanne Willis is a prolific British author known for her extensive work in children’s literature. She has written over 150 books, including picture books, novels, and poetry. Willis’s career began with the publication of her first book, Uncle Father Christmas, in 1986. Her writing often features imaginative storytelling and engaging characters, appealing to a wide range of young readers.
Among her notable works is Tadpole’s Promise, illustrated by Tony Ross, which won the Nestlé Smarties Book Prize in 2003. Another significant title is Who’s in the Loo?, also illustrated by Tony Ross, which was shortlisted for the Red House Children’s Book Award in 2007. Willis frequently collaborates with illustrators, including Tony Ross and Adrian Reynolds, to create visually captivating books.
Jeanne Willis’s contributions to children’s literature have been recognised with several awards. She received the Red House Children’s Book Award for Shhh! in 2005 and the Sheffield Children’s Book Award for There’s an Ouch in My Pouch! in 2008. Her book Dr. Xargle’s Book of Earthlets was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal in 1990.
In addition to her work as an author, Willis has written scripts for children’s television, further showcasing her versatility in storytelling. Her books have been translated into numerous languages, reaching a global audience and solidifying her reputation as a significant figure in children’s literature.
