Jeanette Winterson is a British writer known for her work in both adult and young adult fiction. She published her debut novel, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, in 1985. The novel won the Whitbread Award for First Novel and was later adapted by Winterson into a BBC television drama, which won the BAFTA for Best Drama in 1991.
Winterson has written several books for younger readers, including Tanglewreck (2006), a science fiction novel published by Bloomsbury. Tanglewreck was shortlisted for the 2007 Bolton Children’s Book Award. She has also written The Lion, the Unicorn and Me (2009), a retelling of the nativity story, published by Jonathan Cape.
Her work has received numerous accolades. Winterson was awarded an OBE for services to literature in 2018. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. In addition to her children’s and young adult fiction, Winterson has published novels, short stories, and essays for adults, including The Passion (1987), Sexing the Cherry (1989), and Frankissstein (2019).
Winterson’s books have been translated into multiple languages and are published internationally. She continues to be recognised for her contributions to contemporary literature.
