James Turner is a British comics writer–artist whose work for children appears in UK anthology comics and in collected graphic novels for independent reading in KS2–KS3. He is best known for creating the serials Super Animal Adventure Squad and Star Cat, both published by David Fickling for The DFC and its successor, The Phoenix.
Super Animal Adventure Squad follows a team of animal agents solving outlandish cases with puzzle-like twists and visual gags. Episodes first ran in The DFC and were later issued in book form for schools and libraries. Turner subsequently launched Star Cat, a science-fiction comedy featuring Captain Spaceington and crew; the strip was serialised in The Phoenix before being collected in full-colour editions by David Fickling Books.
Turner’s comics emphasise clear page design, fast pacing and joke density, making them suitable for shared reading and for confident independent readers. His work is used in classrooms and book clubs to support visual literacy, inference and narrative sequencing.
Beyond these series he has contributed one-offs and short features to UK children’s comics, and he continues to develop projects that blend character comedy with adventure settings. His books are catalogued by UK trade and library services in paperback editions for middle-grade readers.
Selected works: Super Animal Adventure Squad; Star Cat (collected volumes).
