Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Jakob Whitfield is a British author and historian of science and technology whose children’s non-fiction focuses on aviation. He holds a degree in aeronautical engineering from Imperial College London and a doctorate in the history of technology from the University of Manchester. Alongside writing, he has worked as a researcher, editor and academic communication trainer, including facilitating workshops on scholarly writing.
Whitfield’s children’s title The Story of Flight, illustrated by Us Now, charts developments from early balloons and airships through to modern aircraft and drones. It was published in the UK by Wren & Rook, an imprint of Hachette Children’s Group, on 7 March 2019, with later editions listed internationally. His academic work includes a PhD thesis on gas-turbine development at Metropolitan-Vickers (1935–1960).
