Ian Hislop is a British journalist, satirist, writer, and broadcaster. He is best known as the editor of the satirical magazine Private Eye, a position he has held since 1986. Hislop was educated at Ardingly College and Magdalen College, Oxford, where he read English. During his time at Oxford, he edited the student magazine Passing Wind and was involved in the Oxford Revue.
Hislop has written extensively for television and radio. He co-wrote the satirical puppet show Spitting Image and the BBC sitcom My Dad’s the Prime Minister. He is also known for his long-standing role as a team captain on the BBC panel show Have I Got News for You, appearing on every episode since its debut in 1990.
In addition to his work in satire and journalism, Hislop has written and presented several documentaries for the BBC, including Not Forgotten, a series about the impact of the First World War, and The Day the Immigrants Left. He has also contributed to radio programmes such as The News Quiz on BBC Radio 4.
Hislop has edited numerous collections of satirical writing and has contributed to books on British history and culture. In 2016, he curated the exhibition I Object: Ian Hislop’s Search for Dissent at the British Museum, which explored objects related to dissent and protest throughout history.
Ian Hislop continues to serve as editor of Private Eye and remains a prominent figure in British media. In 2019, he appeared in the 100th series of Have I Got News for You.
