Hiromu Arakawa is a Japanese manga artist best known for creating the series Fullmetal Alchemist. Born and raised in Hokkaido, Arakawa began her career by contributing to various manga magazines before making her professional debut. Her first major work, Stray Dog, won the 21st Century Shōnen Gangan Award in 1999.
Arakawa’s most prominent work, Fullmetal Alchemist, was serialised in Square Enix’s Monthly Shōnen Gangan magazine from 2001 to 2010. The series follows the story of two brothers, Edward and Alphonse Elric, as they search for the Philosopher’s Stone to restore their bodies after a failed alchemical ritual. Fullmetal Alchemist has been adapted into two anime television series and several films.
In addition to Fullmetal Alchemist, Arakawa has worked on other manga series, including Silver Spoon, which began serialisation in Weekly Shōnen Sunday in 2011. Silver Spoon draws on Arakawa’s experiences growing up on a dairy farm and explores agricultural life through the eyes of a high school student. The series received the Manga Taishō award in 2012 and the Shogakukan Manga Award in 2013.
Arakawa’s body of work also includes contributions to the manga adaptation of The Heroic Legend of Arslan, which started in 2013. Her distinctive art style and storytelling have made her a notable figure in the manga industry.
In 2013, Silver Spoon was awarded the Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category.
