Eric Hill biography

Eric Hill was a British author and illustrator best known for creating the popular children’s character Spot the dog. Born in London, Hill began his career as a graphic designer and illustrator before moving into children’s publishing. His work in advertising and illustration led him to develop the idea for a lift-the-flap book, which became his signature format.

Hill’s first book, Where’s Spot?, was published by Frederick Warne in 1980. The book introduced young readers to Spot, a playful puppy, and featured interactive flaps that children could lift to discover hidden surprises. This innovative approach to storytelling and illustration quickly gained popularity, and Hill continued to write and illustrate further titles in the Spot series.
