Gillian Clarke is a Welsh poet, playwright, and translator whose work is widely recognised in the field of children’s and young adult literature. She was born in Cardiff and educated at Cardiff University. Clarke has contributed significantly to poetry in education, with her poems frequently included in UK GCSE and A Level syllabuses.
Clarke’s poetry often explores themes of nature, Welsh identity, and the human experience. She has published several poetry collections, including Letter from a Far Country (1978), Letting in the Rumour (1989), and Ice (2012). Her work is known for its clarity, lyricism, and engagement with the landscape and culture of Wales.
In addition to her poetry, Clarke has written for radio and has translated works from Welsh into English. She has also worked as an editor and has been involved in various educational projects, promoting poetry among young people.
Gillian Clarke served as the National Poet of Wales from 2008 to 2016. In 2010, she received the Queen’s Gold Medal for Poetry.
