George Eliot was the pen name of Mary Ann Evans, an English novelist, poet and journalist of the Victorian era. She adopted a male pseudonym to ensure her work was taken seriously in a literary world dominated by men.
Her novels include Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860), Silas Marner (1861), Middlemarch (1871–72) and Daniel Deronda (1876). Middlemarch, in particular, is often regarded as one of the greatest works of English fiction for its complex portrayal of provincial life and social change.
Alongside fiction, Eliot wrote essays and translated works from German, including David Strauss’s Life of Jesus. Middlemarch was published in eight parts between 1871 and 1872.
