Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Emily Jones is a UK children’s book illustrator whose work spans fiction for emerging and middle-grade readers, theatre artwork, and graphic storytelling. She studied illustration for children’s books and began sharing her portfolio through commissions and arts organisations before moving into trade publishing.
Early recognition came when Jones was named runner-up in the Observer/Cape/Comica Graphic Short Story Prize in 2017 for Dennis and June. Alongside book work, she has created poster and campaign imagery for stage productions at Sherman Theatre, including family adaptations and seasonal shows.
In publishing, Jones illustrated The Twits Next Door (written by Greg James and Chris Smith, from characters created by Roald Dahl), issued by Penguin Random House in 2024–2025 in multiple territories. She is also the illustrator of Julie Sykes’s illustrated fiction series opener Luna Grace: Girl from Outer Space (Piccadilly Press, 2025), a full-colour title for readers aged roughly 5–9.
Her portfolio includes cover and interior illustration, character design and promotional artwork, with credits across UK and international editions. Selected listings and publisher pages highlight Jones’s role on high-profile properties and new series launches, reflecting a focus on accessible visual storytelling for young readers.
Most recent publication milestone: Luna Grace: Girl from Outer Space, Piccadilly Press, 2025.
