Edward Thomas was a British poet, critic and essayist associated with the Georgian poets. He began his career as a literary critic and writer of prose before turning to poetry in the early 20th century, encouraged by Robert Frost.
His poetry often reflects close observation of the English countryside and themes of transience, memory and war. Notable poems include “Adlestrop,” “Rain” and “As the Team’s Head-Brass.” His work is widely studied in schools and universities for its blending of natural imagery with human experience.
Thomas enlisted in the British Army during the First World War and was killed at the Battle of Arras in 1917. His poem “Adlestrop” was first published in 1917.
