Edward Albee was an American playwright whose works explored themes of identity, family and social expectation. He gained prominence with his one-act play The Zoo Story (1959), which was first performed in Berlin before moving to the United States.
Albee achieved international recognition with Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1962), a play that won the Tony Award for Best Play and was later adapted into an acclaimed film in 1966. His other works include A Delicate Balance (1966), Seascape (1975) and Three Tall Women (1991).
He received multiple Pulitzer Prizes for Drama and was awarded the National Medal of Arts in 1996. Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? won the Tony Award for Best Play in 1963.
