Eddie Ayres is an author, musician, and broadcaster originally from the United Kingdom. He is known for his work in both literature and music education. Ayres studied music at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and later at the Royal Academy of Music in London, focusing on viola and cello.
Ayres spent several years as a professional musician, performing with orchestras in the UK, Hong Kong, and Australia. He became widely recognised as the presenter of the ABC Classic FM radio programme Classic Breakfast in Australia, a role he held for over a decade.
In 2014, Ayres moved to Afghanistan to teach music at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music in Kabul. His experiences there formed the basis of his memoir Danger Music, published by Allen & Unwin in 2017. The book details his time teaching music in Kabul and the challenges faced by his students.
Ayres has also written for younger readers. His children’s book Sonam and the Silence, illustrated by Ronak Taher, was published by Allen & Unwin in 2019. The story is set in Afghanistan and explores the power of music in difficult circumstances.
In addition to his writing and teaching, Ayres has contributed to various publications and media outlets, discussing topics related to music, education, and personal identity. He is known for his advocacy of music education and his work supporting young musicians in challenging environments.
In 2019, Ayres published Sonam and the Silence with Allen & Unwin.
