Deirdre Sullivan is an Irish author known for her work in children’s and young adult fiction. She has written several novels and short story collections, often exploring themes of identity, family, and folklore. Sullivan’s debut novel, Prim Improper, was published in 2010 by Little Island. This book was followed by two sequels, Improper Order and Primperfect, completing the Prim trilogy.
Her writing frequently draws on elements of fairy tales and myth. In 2016, Sullivan published Needlework with Little Island, a novel that was shortlisted for the Children’s Books Ireland Book of the Year Award. She continued to explore dark and lyrical storytelling in Tangleweed and Brine, a collection of feminist retellings of classic fairy tales, published by Little Island in 2017. This collection won the Children’s Books Ireland Book of the Year Award in 2018.
Sullivan has also collaborated with illustrator Karen Vaughan on the book Savage Her Reply, published by Little Island in 2020. This work reimagines the Irish legend of Aife from the Children of Lir story. In addition to her novels and collections, Sullivan has contributed to anthologies and written short fiction for young readers.
Deirdre Sullivan’s Tangleweed and Brine was awarded the Children’s Books Ireland Book of the Year Award in 2018.
