Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Danielle Jawando is a British author and screenwriter whose work spans young adult fiction and television. She studied Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University. Jawando has contributed to several television programmes, including writing for the long-running British soap opera Coronation Street.
Her debut young adult novel, And the Stars Were Burning Brightly, was published by Simon & Schuster Children’s UK in 2020. The novel explores themes of grief, mental health, and the impact of social media. It was shortlisted for the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2021 and the YA Book Prize in 2021.
Jawando’s second novel, When Our Worlds Collided, was published by Simon & Schuster Children’s UK in 2022. This book examines issues of race, identity, and social justice. When Our Worlds Collided won the Jhalak Children’s & YA Prize in 2023.
In addition to her novels, Jawando has written short stories and contributed to anthologies. Her work is recognised for addressing contemporary issues relevant to young people. When Our Worlds Collided winning the Jhalak Children’s & YA Prize in 2023 marks a significant milestone in her career.
