Clement Clarke Moore (1779–1863) was an American scholar, theologian, and poet.
He was born in New York City on 15 July 1779 and died in Newport, Rhode Island on 10 July 1863.
Moore received a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia College in 1798, followed by a Master of Arts in 1801. Later, in 1829, Columbia awarded him the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.
He served as a professor of Oriental and Greek Literature, and of Divinity and Biblical Learning, at the General Theological Seminary in New York City. His academic work included the publication of lexicons, translations and poems.
Moore is best known as the author of the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas” (also known as “’Twas the Night Before Christmas”), first published anonymously in 1823.
