Christina Diaz Gonzalez biography

Christina Diaz Gonzalez is an American author known for her works of children’s and young adult fiction. She grew up in the United States as the daughter of Cuban parents. Gonzalez attended the University of Miami, where she earned her undergraduate degree, and later received a law degree from the same institution. Before becoming a full-time writer, she practised law for several years.

Gonzalez’s debut novel, The Red Umbrella, was published in 2010 by Knopf Books for Young Readers. The book is a historical novel inspired by Operation Pedro Pan, a programme that brought Cuban children to the United States in the early 1960s. The Red Umbrella received recognition as an American Library Association Best Fiction for Young Adults selection.

Her subsequent works include A Thunderous Whisper (2012), which is set during the Spanish Civil War and explores themes of friendship and courage. Gonzalez has also written for younger readers, including the Moving Target series, which began with Moving Target (2015) and continued with Return Fire (2016), both published by Scholastic Press. These books follow the adventures of a young girl caught in a centuries-old conspiracy.

In addition to her novels, Gonzalez contributed to the Rick Riordan Presents imprint with Concealed (2021), a middle-grade thriller. She has also written graphic novels, including Invisible (2022), illustrated by Gabriela Epstein and published by Graphix, an imprint of Scholastic. Invisible tells the story of five students who must work together during a community service project.

Christina Diaz Gonzalez’s novel The Red Umbrella was named an American Library Association Best Fiction for Young Adults selection in 2011.
