Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Cheryl Diane Parkinson is a British author known for her work in children’s and young adult fiction. Her debut middle-grade novel, Billie’s Big Audition, was published by Hashtag Press in 2021. The book is part of the Voices series, which highlights underrepresented stories and characters in children’s literature. Billie’s Big Audition follows the story of a young Black girl navigating her passion for acting and her experiences at stage school.
Parkinson’s writing has been recognised for its contribution to diverse representation in UK children’s publishing. Billie’s Big Audition was selected for the 2022 EmpathyLab’s Read for Empathy collection, which features books chosen for their potential to build empathy in young readers.
Cheryl Diane Parkinson has also contributed to anthologies and has written short stories for children. She is represented by Skylark Literary Agency. Her work continues to be published by Hashtag Press.
In 2022, Billie’s Big Audition was included in the EmpathyLab’s Read for Empathy collection.
