Caroline Magerl is a German-Australian author and illustrator known for her work in children’s literature. She emigrated from Germany to Australia with her family as a child. Magerl has written and illustrated several picture books, including Hasel and Rose (2014), published by Penguin Random House Australia, and Maya and Cat (2018), published by Walker Books. Her illustrations are recognised for their distinctive style and have appeared in both her own books and works by other authors.
Magerl’s book Maya and Cat received the 2019 Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Honour Book award in the Early Childhood category. She has also been awarded the Australian Society of Authors’ Children’s Picture Book Illustrators’ Award and was a recipient of a May Gibbs Fellowship. In addition to her writing and illustration, Magerl has contributed artwork to various publications and exhibitions.
Her picture book Nop was published by Walker Books in 2019. Magerl’s work has been translated into several languages and is held in libraries internationally. Her books have been shortlisted for awards including the Prime Minister’s Literary Awards and the Queensland Literary Awards. Maya and Cat was also included in the International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY) Honour List in 2020.
