Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Barry Loser is the main character in a children’s book series created by British author and illustrator Jim Smith. The first book, I Am Not a Loser, was published in 2012 by Egmont, launching a sequence of humorous illustrated stories for readers aged 7 and up.
The follow-up, I Am Still Not a Loser, won the Roald Dahl Funny Prize in 2013 in the category for children aged 7–14. The series is written in a diary-style format with cartoon illustrations and focuses on Barry’s school life, friendships and everyday mishaps.
Smith has produced more than ten Barry Loser titles, including I Am So Over Being a Loser (2013), I Am Sort of a Loser (2014), Barry Loser and the Holiday of Doom (2014), Barry Loser and the Case of the Crumpled Carton (2015), Barry Loser Hates Half Term (2016), Barry Loser and the Birthday Billions (2017), Barry Loser: Worst School Trip Ever! (2018), Barry Loser is the Best at Football – Not! (2018), and Barry Loser and the Trouble with Pets (2019).
The books are known for their playful wordplay, running jokes and comic drawings, and they remain popular with children who enjoy fast-paced, silly stories.
