Barbara Henderson is a Scottish-based children’s author known for her historical fiction. Her debut novel, Fir for Luck, was published by Cranachan Publishing in 2016. The book is set during the Highland Clearances and follows the story of a young girl named Janet. In 2017, Henderson released Punch, also with Cranachan, which centres on a Victorian boy who becomes involved with a travelling Punch and Judy show.
Her third novel, Wilderness Wars, was published in 2018. This adventure story is set on a remote Scottish island and explores themes of nature and survival. In 2019, Henderson published Black Water, a novella inspired by the true story of the 1842 Meikle Ferry disaster in the Scottish Highlands.
Henderson’s books have been shortlisted for several awards. Fir for Luck was shortlisted for the 2017 Historical Association’s Young Quills Award. Punch was also shortlisted for the Young Quills Award in 2018. In addition to her novels, Henderson has contributed to anthologies and written for educational publications.
Barbara Henderson is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators. She regularly visits schools and literary festivals to deliver workshops and author talks. Her work is published by Cranachan Publishing.
In 2022, Henderson published The Chessmen Thief, a historical adventure inspired by the Lewis Chessmen, with Cranachan Publishing.
