Arundhati Roy is an Indian author and public intellectual. She is best known for her debut novel, The God of Small Things, published in 1997 by IndiaInk in India and by Random House in the United Kingdom. The novel won the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1997. The God of Small Things has been translated into more than 40 languages.
Roy studied architecture at the Delhi School of Architecture. Before publishing her first novel, she wrote screenplays for television and film, including the screenplay for the 1989 film In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones.
In addition to her fiction, Roy has published several works of non-fiction, including The Algebra of Infinite Justice (2002), Field Notes on Democracy (2009), and Capitalism: A Ghost Story (2014). Her essays address a range of political, environmental, and social issues.
Her second novel, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, was published in 2017 by Hamish Hamilton in the UK and Penguin Books in India. The novel was longlisted for the 2017 Man Booker Prize and shortlisted for the 2018 Women’s Prize for Fiction.
Roy received the Sydney Peace Prize in 2004 for her work in social campaigns and advocacy. In 2014, she was awarded the Norman Mailer Prize for Distinguished Writing.
Her most recent novel, The Ministry of Utmost Happiness, was published in 2017.
