Anthony Burgess was an English writer and composer. He is best known for his dystopian novel A Clockwork Orange, published in 1962 by William Heinemann. Burgess wrote more than thirty novels, including the Enderby series, which began with Inside Mr Enderby (1963), and the Malayan Trilogy, published between 1956 and 1959. His other notable works include Earthly Powers (1980), which was shortlisted for the Booker Prize, and Nothing Like the Sun (1964), a fictional account of Shakespeare’s life.
Burgess also produced works of literary criticism, translations, and biographies, including Shakespeare (1970) and Flame Into Being: The Life and Work of D. H. Lawrence (1985). In addition to his writing, Burgess composed over 250 musical works, including symphonies, operas, and choral pieces.
He received the Commandeur des Arts et des Lettres from the French Ministry of Culture in 1988. A Clockwork Orange was adapted into a film by Stanley Kubrick in 1971, bringing Burgess international recognition. His final novel, Byrne, was published posthumously in 1995.
