Recommended reading books for primary & secondary aged children in the UK
Anne Fine is a distinguished British author known for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature. She was born in Leicester, England. Fine studied history and politics at the University of Warwick, graduating in 1968. Her writing career began in 1975 with the publication of her first book, The Summer House Loon.
Fine has written over 50 books for children and young adults. Among her most notable works is Madame Doubtfire, published in 1987, which was later adapted into the successful film Mrs. Doubtfire starring Robin Williams. Another significant work is Goggle-Eyes, which won the Carnegie Medal in 1989.
Her book Flour Babies, published in 1992, received the Carnegie Medal and the Whitbread Children’s Book of the Year Award. Fine’s Bill’s New Frock, published in 1989, is another acclaimed work that explores themes of gender and identity.
Anne Fine served as the second Children’s Laureate from 2001 to 2003, a role in which she advocated for children’s literacy and the importance of reading. Her contributions to literature have been recognised with numerous awards, including the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize and the Smarties Book Prize.
In addition to her children’s books, Fine has written novels for adults, including In Cold Domain and Telling Liddy. Her work is characterised by its wit, insight, and exploration of complex themes.
Anne Fine’s literary achievements were further acknowledged when she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 2003 for her services to literature.
