Anna Hope biography

Anna Hope is a British author and actress. She studied English at Wadham College, University of Oxford, and later completed an MA in Creative Writing at Birkbeck, University of London. Hope’s debut novel, Wake, was published by Doubleday in 2014. The novel is set in the aftermath of the First World War and explores the lives of three women in London. Wake was shortlisted for the National Book Awards New Writer of the Year in 2014.

Her second novel, The Ballroom, was published in 2016. Set in 1911 in a Yorkshire asylum, the book was longlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction in 2016. Hope’s third novel, Expectation, was published in 2019 by Doubleday. The novel examines the lives and friendships of three women over several decades.

In addition to her writing, Anna Hope has appeared as an actress in television and theatre. She is known for her role as Novice Hame in the BBC series Doctor Who. Her novels have been translated into multiple languages. Expectation was longlisted for the 2020 Women’s Prize for Fiction.
