Ann Radcliffe was an English author known for her pioneering work in the Gothic novel genre. She published her first novel, The Castles of Athlin and Dunbayne, in 1789. Her subsequent works include A Sicilian Romance (1790), The Romance of the Forest (1791), The Mysteries of Udolpho (1794), and The Italian (1797). Radcliffe’s novels are characterised by their use of suspense, remote settings, and psychological depth.
Her most famous novel, The Mysteries of Udolpho, achieved significant popularity and influenced later writers, including Edgar Allan Poe and Jane Austen. The Italian was published by T. Cadell and W. Davies in London. Radcliffe’s works were widely read during her lifetime and contributed to the development of the Gothic tradition in English literature.
Ann Radcliffe’s final novel, Gaston de Blondeville, was published posthumously in 1826. She is regarded as a key figure in the history of Gothic fiction.
