Angela Carter was an English novelist, short story writer, and journalist. She studied English literature at the University of Bristol. Carter is known for her works that blend magical realism, feminism, and gothic themes. Her notable novels include The Magic Toyshop (1967), Heroes and Villains (1969), Love (1971), The Infernal Desire Machines of Doctor Hoffman (1972), and Nights at the Circus (1984).
Carter’s short story collections include Fireworks: Nine Profane Pieces (1974) and The Bloody Chamber (1979), the latter of which reimagines classic fairy tales. She also wrote Wise Children (1991), her final novel, and edited The Virago Book of Fairy Tales (1990).
Her work received critical recognition, including the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for Nights at the Circus in 1984. Carter was awarded a fellowship by the Royal Society of Literature in 1982. She also wrote radio plays, screenplays, and non-fiction, including The Sadeian Woman and the Ideology of Pornography (1979).
Angela Carter’s final novel, Wise Children, was published in 1991.
