Aldous Huxley was an English novelist, essayist, and critic, best known for his dystopian novel Brave New World, first published in 1932. He was educated at Eton College and Balliol College, Oxford, where he studied English literature. Early in his career, Huxley worked as a schoolmaster at Eton, where one of his pupils was Eric Blair, later known as George Orwell.
Huxley’s first published novels include Crome Yellow (1921), Antic Hay (1923), and Point Counter Point (1928), which established his reputation for satire and intellectual wit. His body of work spanned fiction, essays, travel writing, criticism, and screenplays. He also wrote Eyeless in Gaza (1936) and the philosophical work The Perennial Philosophy (1945).
In addition to his literary achievements, Huxley became involved in the study of mysticism, human potential, and the use of psychoactive substances, publishing The Doors of Perception in 1954 following his experiences with mescaline. He was also engaged with scientific and philosophical discussions, reflecting an interest in both technology and spirituality throughout his career.
Aldous Huxley was elected Companion of Literature by the Royal Society of Literature in 1962. His most influential novel, Brave New World, remains widely studied and referenced in discussions of science fiction and social criticism.
