Our review:

At the heart of this epic fantasy is Amelio, a realistic and compelling protagonist who discovers a dormant power within himself at the very moment the world needs it most. Residing in Amrigo with his mum, in a province powered by Kevium and where magic is forbidden, Amelio craves something greater. He yearns for the excitement of Nimira, his childhood home, where he last encountered his deceased father, but which is plagued by devastating storms and unpredictable, violent magic.

Driven over the Fault by an unyielding tornado, Amelio is joined by his newly acquired companions Paige and Vintane, eager to uncover the secrets his mum has long kept shrouded in secrecy. They embark on a dangerous quest to unite fractured provinces against the most devastating storm humanity has ever faced, Phenos, the apocalyptic storm to end all storms. The trio’s journey is fraught with danger, relentless challenges and shocking revelations, all of which deepen the intricate bonds between them, from fierce sibling loyalty to tentative romance.

Our verdict:

From the start, Wallace’s creation of fantasy worlds is rich and immersive, drawing readers into a vivid, complex universe where leylines pulse with power and kingdoms will stop at nothing to harness it.

What lifts Storm Bringer beyond a straightforward quest narrative is the depth and complexity of its characters and their relationships. Amelio, Paige and Vintane are beautifully drawn, each bringing their own strengths, secrets and vulnerabilities to the story. The dynamic between the three is one of the novel’s greatest strengths: complex, dynamic and thoroughly convincing.

Bravery, loyalty and love collide in a story that feels relentless, building to a heart-stopping finale that will leave readers both frustrated and breathless. Wallace develops the tension between magic and science with exceptional skill, using it as a formidable lens through which to explore themes of power, unity and human resilience. Storm Bringer is an exceptional beginning to a much-anticipated series.
