Into The Ice: Reflection On Antarctica is an extraordinary book. Part travelogue and part art gallery, it presents a unique view of one of the most inhospitable and inaccessible parts of the world. Authors Alison Lester and Coral Tulloch combine both their own and other people’s journal entries, maps, sketches and paintings, to bring Antarctica to life in a visually stunning format.
The authors’ first-hand experience of this majestic continent comes from many visits, as both Arts Fellows with the Australian Antarctica Division and on tourist-filled expedition ships. They recount their experiences of perilous storms, ten-storey high icebergs and unique wildlife. Antarctic myths and legends are presented alongside accounts of Amundsen, Scott and Shackleton’s epic voyages.
I was staggered to find so much colour down there … the sky is often quite green and the fringes of the icebergs and floes have a turquoise colouring. Sunsets are fantastic crimsons, oranges, golds and greens … I was frightened I’d miss something if I went to bed … Every hour there was something different to see and paint.
Few of us will ever be lucky enough to visit Antarctica in person. In the pages of this book, however, the reader is temporarily transported to the world of majestic ice, stunning snow formations and glorious scenery.
