Stephen Davies is a British author known for his children’s and young adult fiction. He has written several adventure novels, picture books, and non-fiction works, many of which are set in West Africa. Davies spent time living in Burkina Faso, which influenced the settings and themes of his books.
His debut novel, Sophie and the Albino Camel, was published by Andersen Press in 2006. This book was shortlisted for the Glen Dimplex New Writers Award and the Ottakar’s Children’s Book Prize. The story follows a young girl’s journey across the Sahara Desert. Davies continued the series with Sophie and the Locust Curse (2007) and Sophie and the Pancake Plot (2008).
Davies is also the author of the Hilda series, including Hilda and the Hidden People (2017), which is based on the Netflix animated series and published by Flying Eye Books. He has written historical fiction such as Blood & Ink (2015), set in Mali during the 2012 occupation of Timbuktu, published by Andersen Press.
His picture books include Don’t Spill the Milk! (2012), illustrated by Christopher Corr and published by Andersen Press. This book was longlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal. Davies has also written non-fiction, including Survivor: Titanic (2018), published by Scholastic.
Stephen Davies’s work has been translated into several languages. In 2016, Blood & Ink was shortlisted for the North Somerset Teachers’ Book Award. His books have been recognised for their authentic settings and engaging storytelling. In 2019, Hilda and the Hidden People was nominated for the Carnegie Medal.
