Roger Lancelyn Green was a British author and academic, known for his retellings of myths and legends for children. He studied at Merton College, Oxford, and later became a member of the Inklings, a literary group that included C. S. Lewis and J. R. R. Tolkien. Green published numerous works, including Tales of Ancient Egypt (1967), Tales of the Greek Heroes (1958), The Tale of Troy (1958), and King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table (1953). He also wrote biographies, such as C. S. Lewis: A Biography (1974) and Andrew Lang: A Critical Biography (1946).
Green edited and introduced several classic texts, including works by Lewis Carroll. He served as Deputy Librarian at Merton College, Oxford, and was later appointed as a Fellow and Librarian at the college. His retellings of myths and legends have been published by Puffin Books and remain widely available. In 1948, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. Green’s King Arthur and His Knights of the Round Table has been continuously in print since its first publication.
