Patrice Caldwell is an American author and editor known for her work in young adult and children’s literature. She graduated from Wellesley College, where she studied political science and English. Caldwell is the editor of the anthology A Phoenix First Must Burn, published by Viking Books for Young Readers in 2020. The collection features sixteen stories by Black authors, exploring themes of fantasy, science fiction, and magic.
She is also the editor of Out There: Into the Queer New Yonder, an anthology published by Inkyard Press in 2022, which includes stories by LGBTQ+ authors. Caldwell’s debut novel, The Bone Weaver’s Orchard, is forthcoming from Wednesday Books.
In addition to her writing and editorial work, Caldwell founded People of Color in Publishing, an organisation supporting diversity in the publishing industry. She has worked as an editor at Disney-Hyperion and as a literary agent at New Leaf Literary & Media.
A Phoenix First Must Burn was named a Best Book of 2020 by NPR and received starred reviews from several publications. Caldwell continues to contribute to the field through her editorial projects and advocacy for underrepresented voices in literature.
