Ludwig Bemelmans was an author and illustrator best known for creating the Madeline series of children’s books. Born in Austria-Hungary, Bemelmans moved to the United States as a young man. He worked in the hotel industry before turning to writing and illustrating.
Bemelmans published the first book in the Madeline series in 1939. The story follows a young girl named Madeline who lives in a boarding school in Paris. The book is recognised for its distinctive illustrations and rhythmic text. The success of the first book led to several sequels, all featuring Madeline’s adventures in Paris and beyond.
In addition to the Madeline books, Bemelmans wrote and illustrated other works for children and adults. His books often reflect his experiences in Europe and America, and his illustrations are noted for their lively style.
Ludwig Bemelmans received the Caldecott Honor in 1940 for Madeline.
