Jackie French is an Australian author known for her extensive work in children’s and young adult literature. She has written over 200 books, including picture books, historical novels, and non-fiction titles. French’s writing often explores themes of history, nature, and Australian culture.
Her first children’s book, Rain Stones, was published in 1991. Since then, she has produced a wide range of works, including the popular Diary of a Wombat, illustrated by Bruce Whatley. This picture book has received recognition for its portrayal of Australian wildlife and humour. French has also written historical fiction for young readers, such as Hitler’s Daughter and Nanberry: Black Brother White.
French’s books have received numerous awards. Hitler’s Daughter won the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Book of the Year for Younger Readers in 2000. Diary of a Wombat was awarded the CBCA Honour Book for Early Childhood in 2003. French has also been recognised for her contributions to literature and literacy advocacy.
In 2014, Jackie French was named the Australian Children’s Laureate, a role that acknowledges significant contributions to children’s literature in Australia.
