Hiroshi Ito biography

Hiroshi Ito is a Japanese picture-book creator known for humorous, warm-hearted stories for young readers. He studied education at Waseda University and began making picture books while still a student, later building a sustained career as both author and illustrator.

Ito’s first trade picture book appeared in the late 1980s. He went on to publish a large body of work across leading Japanese houses, producing original stories and series fiction. Notable sequences include the “Ruraru-san” books, the “Osaru” stories and the “Sutego” titles, alongside stand-alone works that blend spare text with expressive line and character-led comedy.

His international profile widened with the English-language edition of Free Kid to Good Home, issued for the UK and other markets. The book originated in Japan in the early 1990s and typifies his interest in family dynamics, independence and the everyday dramas of childhood.

Across his career Ito has received major recognition in Japan, including honours such as the Kodansha Publishing Culture Award (Picture Book) and other national children’s literature prizes. He has also been named to the IBBY Honour List.

Ito continues to write and illustrate for children, contributing new titles and reissues that are widely used in schools and libraries. His catalogue now spans many dozens of books, with a consistent focus on stories that invite young readers to observe closely, laugh often and recognise themselves on the page.
