Gayle Forman is an American author and journalist known for her work in young adult fiction. She began her career as a journalist, writing for publications such as Seventeen magazine. Forman published her first book, You Can’t Get There From Here: A Year on the Fringes of a Shrinking World, in 2005, which is a non-fiction travel memoir.
Her debut young adult novel, Sisters in Sanity, was published in 2007. Forman gained international recognition with her 2009 novel If I Stay, which was a New York Times bestseller and was adapted into a feature film released in 2014. The sequel, Where She Went, was published in 2011.
Forman’s other notable works include Just One Day (2013), Just One Year (2013), and Just One Night (2014), which together form a duology and novella. She has also written I Was Here (2015), Leave Me (2016), I Have Lost My Way (2018), and We Are Inevitable (2021).
Forman’s books have received several accolades. If I Stay won the 2009 NAIBA Book of the Year Award and was named an ALA Top Ten Best Book for Young Adults. Where She Went was a 2012 YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults selection. Her works have been translated into over 40 languages.
In 2019, Forman published Frankie & Bug, her first middle-grade novel. Her writing continues to be published by major publishers including Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster. If I Stay remains her most widely recognised work, with over two million copies sold worldwide.
